Alternative Fuel Vehicle Fleet

The State and Alternative Fuel Provider Fleet Program requires covered fleets to acquire alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) as a percentage of their annual light-duty vehicle acquisitions or to employ other petroleum-reduction methods in lieu of acquiring AFVs. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) established these requirements through 10 CFR Part 490 to meet the provisions of the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct).

The fleet of UConn-owned vehicles is a covered fleet and is, therefore, required to meet the requirements of the program. Each year by December 31st, UConn submits a report to the DOE demonstrating compliance with the EPAct requirement that 75% of its acquisitions of light-duty vehicles within the previous model year (September 1st through August 31st) were AFVs. Typically, UConn acquires gasoline/electric hybrid passenger vehicles, which comply with the program.
