Regulated Building Materials
Building materials can contain a number of hazardous components that, if disturbed, can pose a health risk to workers and building occupants. Regulated building materials (RBM) pose no health risk when left undisturbed; however, a health risk may develop when maintenance, renovation, and/or demolition results in the release of harmful constituents from the RBM. UConn policy, as well as State and Federal regulations must be adhered to when RBM is managed, abated, or disposed.
Regulated building materials include, but are not be limited to:
- Asbestos Containing Materials (thermal insultation, floor tiles, mastic and glues)
- Lead-containing paint
- Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in caulk, sealants, and window glazing compounds
