Underground and Above-Ground Storage Tanks
The University uses both above-ground storage tanks (ASTs) and underground storage tanks (USTs) to store fuel, heating oil, and waste oil. These tanks support services such as our Central Utility Plant boilers, emergency electrical generation, vehicle fuels, building heating oil, and waste oil collection at our Motor Pool.
In general UConn’s USTs are managed pursuant to Connecticut’s Underground Storage Tank (“UST”) regulations § 22a-449(d)-101 to 113, inclusive, of the Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies. More information can be found at CT DEEP website:
We also use ASTs to store oil-based products. Most ASTs serve diesel powered emergency generators.
A Spill Prevention Control Countermeasure Plan (SPCC), that is prepared by a licensed Professional Engineer, outlines our management requirements for chemical and petroleum storage. In addition, the SPCC provides emergency response guidance for leaks and spill from both USTs and ASTs.
